The planet Haralik

Haralik is a large planet (2.2 Earth masses) revolving around a yellow star slightly larger than the Sun. A very active plate tectonics resulted in a complex and varied geography, with more than 18 continents and a myriad of islands and lakes. Furthermore, the presence in the system of two hypergiant planets, Foreal and Suphion, produces a fast ice ages cycle, about every 500 years: the Grand Year, which includes a Grand Winter of two centuries, and a Great Summer. These conditions favoured a fast evolution of life, resulting in only 2.2 billion years into intelligent beings: the Phallos. But the fragmentation of the habitable lands also caused the appearance of many races: 14 are historically known, but the stories and legends mention more than 60. Only six are still existing nowadays.

Prehistory

The ancient history of the Phallos is thirty thousand years of endless racial wars, which, with the alternation of Grand Summers and Grand Winters, long precluded the emergence of stable civilizations. But since five thousand years, has emerged a new deal: the Phallos, stupid warriors, are more and more numerous to become Likpas, who are peaceful, wise and funny. This phenomenon, which started discretely, increased over time, and neither the massacres nor eliminations at birth could never prevent the proportion of Likpas to increase continuously. There are in facts no genetic difference between the Phallos and the Likpas: each race of Phallo matches a race of Likpas. The appearance of the Likpas therefore constitutes an evolution, but in the domain of the spirit, instead of being strictly genetical. However it is clear that deciding to stay a Phallo blocks the biological development of the brain. We can therefore consider that it is a form of mental retardation.

History

This era is known thanks to the survivors of Antakaralik. The rest is only known from archaeological surveys, or by more or less reliable reports by Phallo travellers. The increase in the number of Likpas allowed the emergence of the first stable modern civilizations, capable of surviving a Grand Winter, and especially of the first countries governed only by Likpas. Thus, during the 58th Grand Summer, the coalescence of smaller communities, some military victories and the beneficial influence of several religions allowed for the first time the emergence of a great Likpa country: the Arnolike, not on the ruins of the Phallos, but in continuity with them. This explains that the likpas of the Arnolike lived mostly in cities, converting only gradually to a more country life (what is called the urban exodus).

The technical and scientific level of the Arnolike was, seemingly, shared by the neighbouring Phallo countries, and presumably on the whole planet. But many racial hatreds and travel bans prevented the Likpas of the Arnolike to explore far away, which explains their almost total ignorance of what was happening elsewhere.

The Great World War

The war began suddenly, by an attack without notice by the pink Phallos of the large neighbouring country of Mamalik. Their tank columns may have invaded the Arnolike in a few days, if the Likpas did not prepared in secret for such an eventuality. Their strategy was mainly based on huge armament plants deeply buried in the underground fortress of Antakaralik. The Antakaralik caves were inhabited since immemorial times: there are still today cave paintings (including the oldest known representation of antennas) and rooms for temples with huge statues of a forgotten religion. Over the millennia these ancient temples were used as tombs, warehouses, prisons, without however anybody touched the statues. From the beginning, the factories were installed deeper, with the huge mines and four eliktric power plants on the underground river. The likpas of the Arnolike, careful, also installed here schools for technicians, engineers, and laboratories. Thus, when the tank columns of the Mammalik Phallos entered the Arnolike, they met the very unpleasant surprise of facing a wall of tanks firing anti-tank shells, against which they had no protection. It is said that the Black Gates of Antakaralik vomited continuous columns of tanks for three days, and the blitzkrieg of the Phallos turned into a blitz-fail, while the Arnolike likpas invaded the whole Mamalik, placing it under guardianship.

The sixty Wonder Years

The sixty years which followed the World War were the finest in the history of the ancient Haralik, before the Nuclear War. Technological progress had enabled extraordinary discoveries, and the Likpas were considering to send their first satelliks in space. However, they remembered the lesson of the World War, not disarming and continuing to build a huge science and technology machinery in Antakalalik. This is what allowed their survival, later. On the surface, the Arnolike grew into a beautiful country where the cities became less important. The peace allowed for arts, scientific studies and spiritual practices to grow. The Arnolike became a place of culture and civilikzation, never seen on Haralik which was ravaged by racial wars since immemorial times. Even the spectre of war seemed to recede away, with many more tolerant and democracic laws in the neighbouring Phallo countries.

The Nuclear War.

When the Likpas discovered the fission of uranium, they quickly understood the danger threatening them. They built Antakaralik in a huge nuclear shelter, and launched the development of a powerful fighter aircraft. But it was already too late: large radioactive fallout had already taken place years before, indicating that the Phallos had started a nuclear war, somewhere on the other side of Haralik. The doomsday was only a matter of a few years.

The first known blow was to the wonderful island of Auweara. The first ship to see Auweara, the next day, found a plain of quicklime, from which emerged the three basalt hills and the ancient Spyramid of the likpas of paradise, completely vitrified, where the previous day there was a wonderful forest of enchanted poetry, songs and beauty. Of the dozens of species of butterflies and flowers of the ineffable Auweara paradise, of the wonderful multicoloured antennas of the likpas of paradise, only remained some photos. The second shot was for Karelik, the country where the musicians Lyre Likpas lived in harmony with their Phallos, the Karphallos. After comes an atrocious litany of millions of blind and hungry refugees seeking an impossible shelter. Then there was the Great Epidemic. In only two days, the survivors of the Arnolike began to die in mass of a kind of flu. Understanding that the stake was no longer to save people, but to save the very existence of their specie, the Likpas of Antakaralik immediately closed the Black Gates and dynamited the access galleries, to avoid being contaminated. In a few terrible days, the huge cities of the whole Haralik changed to mass graves rotting in the open air. Then came a final silence, over a dead world. The great epidemic had eliminated all the Phallos. All of them, innocent or guilty. The last thermonuclear bomb exploded a month later on a now desert planet. We never knew who launched them, and why.

Antakaralik: the darkness, the survival.

Nearly sixty thousand pink Likpas and twenty thousand other races found themselves locked in a chaotic Antakalalik. And only a few dozen boobettes. The likpas could accommodate an underground life, but not them. This quickly arose a formidable problem: reproduction.

Initially, the metamorphosis allowed to have more boobettes. By hormonal controls, they only gave Likpas, twins or quads. But after a few years of reproduction, they had to get out. To see the trees and the sky. And forever renounce to reproduction, and condemned to death by the radiations.

Other problems, energy, food, maintenance of knowledge, were not easy either to solve, in this closed world. The Likpas started to synthesize all their food in their chemical plants. Synthesizing everything, proteins, vitamins, in reaction vessels formerly used to make explosives.

On the surface, nature quickly found its rights back, on a desert continent, seriously contaminated with strontium and caesium, uninhabitable for centuries.

But the most vicious problem was the accumulation of genetic diseases, the most terrible long-term effect of radioactive fallout. The whole first generation of Antakaralik had been irradiated, and over the centuries the recessive genetic diseases would go accumulating, irrevocably destroying the community of Antakaralik, and other possible communities of survivors somewhere else in the world. The likpas were condemned. For all these reasons, the scientific efforts of Antakaralik were almost exclusively on two purposes: thermonuclear fusion, and the manipulation of the genetic code. Two hundred years after the closure, in the heart of a Grand Winter, the likpas were only eight thousand into Antakalalik, their biodiversity existing only in the form of pieces of corpses preserved in liquid nitrogen.

But a new purple flame was now shining into the heart of the mountain: thermonuclear fire! This increased energy allowed for cultivations in the caves, thanks to powerful lamps. Almost in the same time, the first genes were encoded in electronic form, then transcripted again into living molecules. Powerful computers recorded all the genes of the survivors and of the dead, tracking genetic diseases and deleterious mutations. And save as much alleles as possible, the greatest biodiversity: it takes more than a thousand genomes to actually save a race! The Likpas number decreased again to nearly five thousand, but now their genes were safe in the memories of computers, especially the minority races. It took still more than a century to be able to entrust the formation of a baby to machines, but the Likpas did it: the first Mothers began to repopulate Antakaralik of perfectly healthy beings, despite the radioactive pollution which was still covering the area. Without the Mothers no one could survive in the caves, and their community would eventually die. Little by little, the nuclear pollution decreased, and at least it was no more threatening their descendants. The likpas went out of Antakaralik again, daring to rebuild villages and fields. It was the 61st Grand Spring, the second since the nuclear war. Thanks to the Mothers, their number went increasing again.

The Renaissance.

Genetic control allowed to settle and live on the less radioactive land. For this a sinister map indicated the most polluted places: the terrible patches. Strontium and cesium were extinct, but the neptunium and plutonium would still need thousands of years to release their deadly grip. And people often died young, of cancer or leukemia, but at least the Mothers allowed for the birth of perfectly healthy beings, free of any genetic disease. The Mothers would theoretically allow to repopulate Haralik in a few years, but it was needed to educate all these children, so that they did not became Phallos again. The disease of being a Phallo had already cost so much suffering! Then the Mothers were programmed to ensure the base education to Likpas children, under the supervision of real likpas.

Little by little the likpas repopulated the Arnolike. The country was now covered with thick forests, but everywhere were ruins and traces of roads or fields, memories of the terrible tragedy. Sometimes concrete stumps were still emerging from trees. Animal life also had taken its full rights again, but most of the boobals (mammals) were missing and were never found again. It took yet another Grand Winter for the Likpas to restore a population and an industrial fabrics. Only in the 62nd Grand Spring, fourteen hundred years after the tragedy, some races wanted to migrate into their country of origin, eager to find the places where their ancestors once lived. Thus was launched the exploration of Haralik, their very own planet which the Likpas even not know a third.

The explorations showed everywhere the same pathetic landscapes of ruins overgrown with vegetation. But against all expectations, communities of survivors were found. The main problem that all had to face was of course the multiplication of genetic diseases, due to the radiations. Each had found an original solution, or enjoyed special circumstances. One of the most extraordinary cases was the ones of the Tibetan Likpas, who regularly engaged in divination, to see if an ovulation was conducive to life or carrier of disease. They were doing well, with only ten per cent of sick people. The hairy Indian Likpas could be saved with the hairs of their deads, which they used to throw in special wells. Could also be saved the Rastalikpas, the antennaed Indian Likpas and the Babaliks (hippie Likpas with flowers in their hair). But the Golden likpas, great architects, were sadly extinguished only a few years before the aircrafts flew over their last village. Their poor mouldy remains did not allowed to reconstruct complete genomes. But they had left a fantastic collection of CDroms of their wonderful culture!

In all, six races of Likpas were preserved in Antakalalik, or found among the survivors, out of the fourteen actually known before the nuclear war. But antic reports and legends mention more than sixty.

The triumph of the Likpas.

The exploration of Haralik quickly allowed to lay the foundations of a new planetary civilization. Knowing their world was now free of any threat of war, the likpas of Haralik developed openly, but slowly and carefully, in order not to recreate the conditions of a resurgence of phallotism. The number of Phallos can no longer exceed 5%, and it is in constant decrease since. One of the first activities of the new Haralik has been the exploration and systematic preservation of all the ruins. But the need to recreate fields and homes, made that it was decided to retain only the most poignant, or to search only for the bones, for the reconstitution of the lost races. So it happens, even today, that the shout of «genome genome» suddenly halts all the activity on a site.

This new found strength allowed the Likpas to finally embark on one of their most cherished projects: the exploration of space. For more than three centuries, space probes and inhabited vessels reached all the planets in the system of Haralik. Even the dreadful Haphazer, the carbon and tar planet, was visited by powerful robots capable of withstanding its hellish heat. However Bombalik attracted all the solicitude of the Likpas. Indeed it soon appeared that Bombalik was likformable, and today the settlements already have thousands of inhabitants. The climate is beginning to change, and the eternal ice which floats on its oceans lost half of its thickness.

The inseminating probes.

However the most likpatous project was certainly the inseminating probes. Given the impossibility of inhabited interstellar travel, but with Mothers able to create life, the idea appeared obvious to send to other systems some Mothers bearing only genetic codes in computer data banks. Once arrived on a suitable planet, the Mother would then undertake the likformation of the planet, releasing bacteria capable of altering the environment. Then, once the conditions are met, and a stable ecosystem established, they would give life to the first Likpas. For us authors of this text, it is totally impossible to know if such a crazy project had even minimal chances of success. But if you read this, it is that it was successful. Please develop in harmony, peace and happiness, without ever leaving phallotism take an any power over your lives.

Testimony of Boobette, seven years old, after a visit to Antakaralik.

Today we visited the caves of Antakaralik with our school. I was very impressed. All these galleries lit with small lamps and these completely black walls it was terrible and very sad. We really have the feeling that people were unhappy. We wonder how they could live in there, to spend their entire lives without ever seeing the Sun or the sky. I would not like to live at this time. At lunchtime we ate synthetic food. It was not good. And yet, we visited the parties where the Boobettes can go. The parts for the Likpas give a feeling as it was very small, very stuck in. We also saw the Black Gates, but we could not enter because it is collapsed. It is the Likpas inside who blasted the galleries, for not catching the great epidemic. When I shall be grown up, I want to have children, but with my husband, not something that a machine puts in our belly. I heard that the first natural fertilization experiments will start in five hundred years. But I shall be already old. Really the nuclear industry was not good. It was very selfish to build plants without thinking that we would be sick.
