Halas No, it would not have worked, the scragun would have broken everything as it went along..
But whyyyy?
This page, created in 2008, reflects the scientific conceptions of the time: the accretion disc around a star or planet would spiral towards the centre. In fact, this is not the case, just as it is not for Saturn's ring, which has been stable for millions of years, probably since its creation. For a ring as large as the one in this image, the only instability is to condense into moons. The accretion discs fall onto the central body only when matter continues to arrive on them from opposite directions, cancelling out their orbital velocity and falling onto the central body. But this is rare, and few stars do this; they are called FuOrs after the first one covered: FU Orionis. I still left this Dantesque scene of a planet becoming red-hot under the constant bombardment from its accretion disc. The real scene would be much more confusing.
